Calgary Canada’s Steve Claggett (15-0-1, 10 KOs) stopped crowd favorite Ricky Duenas (12-2, 6 KOs) after four rounds Friday night at the Double Tree Hotel in Ontario Ca.

The Canadian would hit the deck in the first round from a combination of punches that sent him into and nearly through the ropes. A short right hand as he was stumbling to his feet sent Clagget down for the count. Unfazed by the early knockdown, Clagget rallied back in the second and landed a right hand to the jaw of Duenas, sending him crashing to the canvas. Duenas was clearly hurt and on shaky legs but made it through the round. The two went toe-to-toe in the third but in the fourth, Clagget was able to land a series of right hands that rocked the El Monte native and once again Duenas found himself on the canvas. In survival mode, Duenas would hold on and make it through the round. Unfortunately for Duenas, referee Ray Corona would call a halt to the action at the end of four rounds at the request of his’ corner.

Undefeated lightweight Alejandro Luna (11-0, 8 KOs) won a unanimous decision over tough veteran Aldolfo Landeros (21-28-2, 10 KOs) after six rounds. Luna pressed the action from the opening bell while Landeros looked to counter punch his way to a victory. Though the Mexican veteran did have his moments, he just could not match the accuracy of Luna’s left hook which stunned him in the fifth round. Luna would go on to dominate and earn scores of 60-54 all around.

Denver Colorodo’s Shawn “Bones” Nichol (6-12, 5 KOs) upset previously unbeaten Richard Contreras (9-0-1, 8 KOs) in a bloody six round bout in the super bantamweight division. Contreras, coming off an eight month layoff due to a fractured jaw suffered in his previous bout came out swinging for the fences but was simply out boxed in the opening two rounds. In the third, Nichol made the mistake of trading with Contreras on the inside and took some big shots. Nichol, unfazed went back to boxing in the fourth while Contreras pressed forward with no jab, looking for one big shot that never came. In the fifth, Nichol landed a vicious combination of punches that had Contreras hurt and nearly out. Referee Ray Corona was close to calling the bout after a series of head-snapping blows. Contreras would make it out of the round and Nichol would go on to take the victory with scores of 58-56 and 58-56. The third judge had it even at 57-57.

Riverside’s Juan Ramon Reyes (8-1-1, 1 KO) outworked a game Jose Angel Cota (15-8-1, 5 KOs) to earn scores of 60-54 after six rounds of action in the super bantamweight division. Reyes came out swinging at the sound of the bell and never let up. Despite a few counter combinations Cota just couldn’t keep up with Reyes’ output.

Unbeaten Javier Torres (4-0, 2 KO) stopped an over-matched Gary Cobia (0-3) in the opening round of a scheduled four round bout in the heavyweight division. A left hook sent Cobia crashing to the canvas in the opening minute of the round. Moments later a left hook to the body sent him to the canvas a second time. Referee Ray Corona stopped the bout at 2:05 at the request of Cobia’s corner.

Maywood’s Lissette Medel (8-1-1) dominated Cynthia Munoz (7-1, 4 KOs) en route to a six round unanimous decision. Munoz pressed forward but Medel boxed and ripped combinations to the head and body, earning scores of 60-54 on all three cards.

Canadian heavyweight Matt Kadian (6-1-1, 4 KOs) and Palmdale’s Avery Gibson (0-1-2) fought to a four round majority draw. After four sloppy rounds, Gibson had won over the crowd but not the judges. Scores were 39-37 for Kadian and 38-38 twice. Standnfight.com had it 39-37 for Gibson.
