WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) Stopped Daniel Geale (31-4, 16 KOs) inside four rounds on Saturday night at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Cotto came out at the bell and immediately went to work on the body, landing left hooks to the mid section and boxing his way out. Geale pressed the action in the second and third but Cotto boxed and continued to pepper the body.  Thirty seconds into round four, Cotto went on the attack and landed a huge left hook that sent the Australian crashing to the canvas. A weary Geale was up at the count of nine and was allowed to continue. A follow up barrage punctuated by a right hand dropped Geale for a second time, this time however, when he rose to his feet he did not want to continue. Referee Harvey Doc waved it off at 1:28 after Geale shook his head no, when asked if he was OK.

“I just tried to do my best and I caught him with a really good left hook.” said Cotto who was asked about possible fights with Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin “”I’ve had 44 fights in my whole carreer and Canelo will be just another one. If Gennady is available after that, why not ”

Notes:

  • Cotto was defending the WBC strap for the first time.
  • Geale was forced to meet Cotto at a catchweight of 157. Geale unofficially weighed in at 185 on fight night.
  • Gennady “GGG” Golovkin was in attendance as well as reps from Golden Boy, unassumingly on behalf of Canelo Alvarez.
