Former lightweight champ Julio “The Kidd” Diaz (40-7, 29 KOs) put on a show in front of the hometown crowd Saturday night at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio Ca.

Hailing from the neighboring town of Coachella, Diaz dominated and eventually stopped Puerto Rican Hector Sanchez (19-3, 9 KOs) in the fifth round of a scheduled ten.

Diaz continued his climb as a welterweight, dropping the taller Sanchez in round two and ending it just three rounds later. Diaz brutally worked the body then rocked Sanchez with a left hook, right hand combination that sent him back against the ropes. A follow up combination had referee Tom Taylor stepping in to stop the beating at 2:03 of the fifth round.

In the co-feature Veteran Roger “Speedy” Gonzalez (28-6, 18 KOs) pulled off the upset and took a ten round majority decision over young prospect Andrew “Chango” Cancio (14-2-2, 11 KOs) of Blythe Ca. Cancio pressed the action in nearly every round but Gonzalez was able to box and counter with pin-point accuracy. After ten rounds of back-and-forth action, one judge had the fight even with a score of 95-95 but was overruled by the deciding two who both saw it 96-94 for Gonzalez.

On the undercard,

Super featherweight prospect Daniel “Twitch” Franco (4-0-1, 2 KO) scored a third round TKO over previously unbeaten Jesus Sandoval (2-1-1). Time was 2:51.
