Gallery Giovanni Santillan crushes foe in hometown fight!

Undefeated Jr. welterweight prospect Giovanni Santillan (14-0, 7 KOs) scored a dominate fifth round KO victory over Puerto Rico’s Osenohad Vasquez (7-2-1, 2 KOs) in his hometown of San Diego Ca. on Saturday night at the San Diego Harley Davidson dealership. Santillan dominated the action and rocked Vasquez with a barrage of punches to end the fourth round. A clearly hurt Vasquez staggered to his corner and was late coming out for the fifth round. Giovanni kept the pressure on and was on the attack when a white towel flew in from Vasquez’ corner. Referee Ray Cobian stepped in and waved it off at 2:57 of round five.

In the co-feature, “The San Diego Kid” Chris Martin (27-4-3, 9 KOs) rebounded with an eight round unanimous decision over tough veteran Giovanni Caro (24-15-4, 19 KOs). Coming off a decision loss late last year, Martin got off to a slow start but rallied in the second half. Caro, of Mexico City pressed the action and dominated early but Martin soon found his rhythm and boxed his way to a close unanimous decision after 8 rounds. All three judges agreed with scores of 77-75 all for Martin.

Super bantamweight Danny Roman (10-2-1, 4 KOs) scored a second round TKO over Pedro Melo (9-6-2, 2 KOs) in a bout scheduled for eight. Roman pressed the action and scored a knockdown midway through the opening round. A follow up barrage in the final seconds of the round staggered the bloodied Melo. He would survive the round but could not answer the call for the second round. Referee David Mendoza would wave it off at the corners request.

San Diegos’ own Adrian Vargas (9-0-1, 6 KOs) scored a quick first round KO over Miguel Rico (2-6-1) of Mexicali MX. A left hook floored Rico in the first minute and a well placed body shot ended it moments later. Referee Tony Crebs would reach the count of ten with Rico on the canvas and in obvious pain. Official time of the stoppage was 1:50

Super bantamweight Jonathan Alcantra (6-12-2, 1 KO) upset previously unbeaten Heriberto Delgado (11-1, 6 KOs) of Tijuana MX. Alcantra pressed the action from the opening bell and dominated on all three cards, earning a 60-54 shut out after six rounds.

San Diego’s Ulises Sierra (6-0-2, 4 KOs) and LA’s Jas Phillips (4-5-1, 1 KO) fought to a four round split-decision draw. Phillips seemed to outwork the local fighter but when the cards were read only one had it in favor of Phillips with a score of 39-37. Another judge had it flipped at 39-37 for Sierra while the third and deciding judge had it even at 38-38.

Chula Vista’s Antonio Arellano (7-2-1, 2 KOs) stopped Mario Hermosillo (12-14-4, 2 KO’s) in the opening round of a scheduled six. A right uppercut sent Hermosillo to the canvas and after an eight count, referee Jose Cobian determined that he could not continue. Official time was 2:12 of the first round.

The seven bout fight card was presented by Thompson Boxing Promotions and was their first show in San Diego.
