This past weekend, WBC Diamond middleweight title holder Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez closed out training camp and will now head east to kick off “fight week” in New York.

The slick southpaw and arguably the best middleweight in the world will look to defend his title for the third time in a “St. Patrick’s Day” clash with Mathew “Mack The Knife” Macklin at the Madison Square Garden in New York NY.

Martinez (48-2, 27 KOs) KO’d previously undefeated Serhiy Dzinziruk to claim the vacant strap and succesfully defended it with an 11th round KO over unbeaten Darren Barker last year. Martinez’s last five opponents hold a combined record of 172-3.

Macklin (28-3, 19 KOs), of the United Kingdom was on an 11 fight win streak until suffering a tough split decision loss to Felix Sturm last year. The two fought an inside war for 12 rounds but in the end it was Sturm on top in his own backyard of Germany.

The Oxnard fighter by way of Argentina will step into the ring as a huge favorite (-1050) on Saturday and should he win, a long list of potential super-matches await.

The card which will be aired live on HBO World Championship Boxing® is entitled, “THE REAL Middleweight Championship – Get Your Irish Up”. The card is promoted by DiBella Entertainment and will be televised live on HBO beginning 10PM
