“You win some you lose some and tonight I lost.” -Lucas Matthysse

On Saturday night Lucas “The Machine” Matthysse suffered the fourth loss of his career at the hands of undefeated Ukrainian Viktor “The Iceman” Postol at the Stub Hub center in Carson Ca.

Matthysse, who was favored in the super lightweight title fight started well but had trouble overcoming Postol’s height and reach advantage. In the tenth round Matthysse was hit by a right hand that sent him to the canvas where he was counted out by referee Jack Reiss. After the fight the Argentinian slugger would say that he felt a pop in his left eye -the same eye that had suffered previous damage due to an unintentional clash of heads- and was momentarily blinded by the shot that followed rounds later.

“I’m fine now but I went blind for a while and I couldn’t see anything. I wasn’t hurt, I went blind and obviously it was cause for concern. The headbutt affected me. It was bad and it hurt, he hit me right in the eye and it just wasn’t my night. I couldn’t get off and he really frustrated me. With his reach, it was tough to get inside on him. I was able to land some punches and do what I wanted in some of the rounds but he frustrated me and I just lost my head. I don’t know what happened. After a while I lost focus and I was just fighting on instinct.”
