The Rundown: Winky, Canelo, Pac on Steroids and May behind bars!

Yup it’s back, The weekly Rundown.. For those who are reading this for the first time, ‘The Rundown’ is how Standnfight.com got started. It was a weekly blog hosted on Blogspot. From there it grew into what you see today.

That out of the way… Lets go!

So, as much as I tried, I could not get into this weekend’s Showtime card and I had a good excuse to miss it… My neices grad party made me not feel so bad about missing “Four Warned” from the Home Depot Center in Carson Ca. I cant’ help but feel a little bad about missing a live event in my own back yard!

In the main event, Showtime commentator Antonio Tarver and Freddy Roach pupil Lateef Kayode fought to a 12 round split decision draw.

I monitored the fight via twitter and got updates from those at the party who were in and out of the house on Saturday, so when I heard “Tarver is getting his” I went in and caught the last three rounds of the fight. Tarver looked like he was stuck in the mud and winged shots like a commentator…but was catching Kayode with a left from the southpaw stance and rocked the Nigerian on multiple occasions. Unfortunately,  in the end Tarver had given up too many of the early rounds. And yes that’s pretty much all there is to say about that!

I caught the Peter Quillin vs. Winky Wright fight Sunday morning and saw Quillin get the unanimous decision over Winky.

Now if you remember, Quillin said he was going to “take Wright to Pluto“… Apparently that means going the distance with a 40 year old fighter who had only seen action twice in 5 years and lost both those fights. And look average doing so!

Winky later tweeted:

@RealWinkyWright: It was fun while it lasted I did what I set out to do and that was to be great. Part of being a good boxer is knowing when to call it quits

If I can’t be the champion again theres no need to keep boxing. But I thank all of u from the bottom of my heart for always supporting me

Also on that card Leo Santa Cruz remained unbeaten, putting in a solid performance against Vusi Malinga.

Austin Trout dominated Delvin Rodriguez en route to a unanimous decision and may have won a shot at Saul “Canelo” Alvarez who was sitting ringside .

Yes, Canelo is still looking for a dancing partner for his September 15 pay-per-view bout.

James Kirkland had supposedly agreed to fill in for Paul Williams who was forced to withdraw due to a Motorcycle accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down but then Kirkland withdrew when his surgically repaired shoulder didn’t feel right in training… well at least that was the first story. ESPN.com later reported that a friend had advised Kirkland to hold out for $2.5 million, which his manager Cameron Dunkin called “ridiculous”

Also on Saturday night, Rocky Juarez lost his 6th straight bout. The 2008 Olympic silver medalist lost a unanimous decision to Young prospect Andrew Cancio at the Fantasy springs Casino in Indio Ca.. Despite a solid effort and a second round knockdown, Rocky just didn’t have enough in the tank to get the victory. He eventually tasted the canvas himself in the 5th but went the distance.

Looks like Rocky has fallen into that gatekeeper roll now and will be the test to gauge the upcoming prospects. I think his best shot at another title shot was his previous fight against Vicente Escobedo, a big win over Escobedo could have been a start in the right direction but coming up short in that fight and now taking an L on Saturday… It’s pretty much a wrap!

On to Friday, NBC sports put on a card from the Sands Casino and resort in Bethlehem Penn. where Gabriel Rosado stopped Sechew Powell and Ronald Cruz outworked Prenice Brewer.. now what happened next is what caught peoples attention. In a post fight interview, Brewer went way off topic and said “Manny Pacquiao is on steroids, he’s off now and looks like shit”… yes, he did! It was actually a response to Freddy Roach having Cruz winning the fight.

And last but not least, Floyd Mayweather turned himself in to a Las Vegas courtroom and will begin his 90 day sentence. Yes, 50 Cent was there to see him off and though May had zero to say, Fif told reporters “He’ll be OK”…  Now I’m not sure why exactly but it seems to me that people are facinated by mug shots… Just hours after being booked TMZ released Floyd’s mugshot and that thing seemed to be everywhere!
