Tomayo edges Esquivias

Coming off the biggest win of his career -a nine round KO victory over Rafael Marquez- Efrain Esquivias (17-2-1, 10 KOs) returned to the ring on Friday night and lost an eight round majority decision to tough veteran Ruben Tamayo (22-5-3, 15 KOs).

Esquivias, who was fighting well above his normal weight class looked slow and never really seemed to find his rhythm. Tamayo, of Ciudad Obregon Mexico used is height and reach to outbox the Carson California native.

After eight rounds of action, one judge would see it even at 76-76. The deciding two judges would see Tamayo ahead with scores of 77-75 and 78-74.

In the co-feature, a battle between two undefeated fighters saw San Diego’s Giovanni Santillan (12-0, 7 KOs) deal Danlyar Ganyk (10-1, 4 KOs) his first loss.

Ganyk proved to have a sturdy chin but waited until the final two rounds before he mounted any kind of offense and by then it was too late. Santillan simply outworked the Ukrainian fighter to earn scores of 78-74 all around.

On the undercard,

Welterweight prospect Jose Roman (16-1-1, 11 KOs) destroyed Mexico’s Lauro Alcantar (8-2, 1 KO) with a left hook to the body that left him unable to continue. Roman, of Garden Grove., found his distance with a few quick jabs and unloaded a devastating left hook to the liver that sent Alcantar to the canvas. Referee Eddie Hernandez would reach the count of ten with Alcantar laid out on the canvas. Official time of the stoppage was 1:19 of opening round.

Santa Ana lightweight Erick Ituarte (6-0-1, 1 KO) won a unanimous decision over tough journeyman Juan Jose Sandoval (7-13-1, 4 KOs) after four rounds. Sandoval, who despite his losing record, always puts on a show, once again gave it his all. He pressing the action but tonight the Mexican fighter was simply outgunned. The quicker and more accurate Ituarte picked his shots and pulled out the victory with scores of 39-37 and 40-36 twice.

Super bantamweights Fernando Samaniego (6-0-1, 3 KOs) and Francisco Camacho (2-4-1, 1 KO) fought to a four round majority draw. Samaniego applied pressure throughout but was caught numerous time with big overhand rights and left hooks. He was successful with an uppercut, left hook combo but may have stayed in the pocket a moment too long during exchanges. After four give-and-take rounds, one judge had Samaniego up with a score of 39-37. unfortunately for him the deciding two judges saw it even at 38-38 for the draw.
