Fourteen Young Boxers Win Junior World Team Open Titles in Reno

The first-ever Junior World Team Open was held January 8-11 at the Sierra Resort and Casino in Reno, Nev. Fourteen young boxers were crowned champions following four days of action at the inaugural event. JaJaira Gonzalez (Glendora, Calif.) won the first gold medal of the tournament on the first day of action in Reno, taking the featherweight crown in female action.
On the men’s side, thirteen boxers won gold medals and the chance to represent the United States at the 2013 AIBA Junior Men’s World Championships this summer in Kiev, Ukraine. The winners were: pinweight Jordan White (Waldorf, Md.), light flyweight Daniel Gonzalez (Moreno Valley, Calif.), flyweight Evan Sanchez (Fresno, Calif.), flyweight Shakur Stevenson (Newark, N.J.), bantamweight Devin Haney (Las Vegas, Nev.), featherweight Michael Nelson (Mansfield, Ohio), lightweight Keoni Adric, Jr. (Haleiwe, Hawaii), light welterweight Brandon Trejo (Napa, Calif.), welterweight Javier Estrada (Palmdale, Calif.), junior middleweight Alexis Rocha (Santa Ana, Calif.), middleweight Eric Murguia (Slymar, Calif.) light heavyweight Suray Mahmutovic (Daly City, Calif.), and heavyweight  Pano Tiatia (St. George, Utah).
