Golovkin crushes Rubio in 2!

WBA/IBF Middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) crushed former WBC interim title holder Marco Antonio Rubio (59-6-1, 51 KOs) inside 2 rounds on Saturday night, in front of a record crowd of over 9,000 at the Stub Hub in Carson Ca. After a dominate opening round, Golovkin landed a left hook, right uppercut combination that stunned Rubio and sent him to the ropes. Moments later, an overhand left hook landed and Rubio was down for the count. Referee Pat Russell would reach the count of 8 with Rubio attempting to get to his feet. Rubio was on his feet by 10 but was not allowed to continue. Official time of the stoppage was 1:19. “GGG” claimed the WBC interim strap which Rubio vacated when he could not make weight on Friday.

“I don’t like dancing around, I like to fight. This is a true fight” said Gennady who then called out Miguel Cotto “Look at me, I have 3 belts and I say here; i want to fight everybody… I think first Miguel Cotto”

In the co-featured bout, undefeated featherweight Nicholas Walters (24-0, 20 KOs) stopped Nonito Donaire (33-2, 21 KOs) in the 6th round of a scheduled 12. Walters pressed the action in the opening round but was rocked by a left hook in the final moments of the second. Walters recovered and in the 3rd, landed a right uppercut that buckled the legs of Donaire. It would be ruled a knockdown, the first of Donaire’s career. Pressure and a long jab kept Walters on top, despite a few well placed right hands by Donaire. The end would come in the final seconds of the 6th when a missed left hook left the “Filipino Flash” wide open for a clubbing right hand that sent him face first onto the canvas. Donaire managed to make it to his feet by the count of 10 but Referee Raul Caiz Jr. would not allow him to continue.

“He caught me with a few good shots in the beginning because he has power and speed” said Walters “I recuperated and got the job done”

“I was at my best” said Donaire who would give a definitive answer about retiring but hinted at dropping down a weight class  ” The size he had over me, I couldn’t move. He was amazing and  overwhelmed me”
