NYSAC Cancels Mares vs. Cuellar Due To Medical Condition
According to a LA Times report, the June 25th title fight between Abner Mares and Jesus Cuellar has been canceled by the New York State Athletic Commission due to Mares’ unspecified medical condition.
Mares has fought with a noticeable eye condition for years and was approved to fight in California in August of 2015 where he lost a majority decision to Leo Santa Cruz.
Mares vs Cuellar was the scheduled co-feature to Keith Thurman vs. Shawn Porter at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn NY. Cuellar was to defend his WBA featherweight strap but is now left with no opponent. Undefeated fighters Oscar Molina and Jarrett Hurd are set to battle on the undercard and will likely be bumped up to co-main event.
