Hot! Gallery Rios upsets Diaz in Ontario!

Flyweight Joseph Rios (11-7-2, 4 KOs) pulled out the upset, earning a split decision over previously unbeaten Miguel Diaz (9-0, 4 KOs) on Friday night at the Double Tree Hotel in Ontario Ca.

Rios was the aggressor from the opening bell, while Diaz chose to lay back and counter punch from the outside. Constant movement and a bit of holding kept Diaz out of any serious trouble as Rios continued the pressure and landed the occasional right hand. After eight rounds of action, one judge would favor Diaz’s slick style, scoring it 77-75 for the Allentown PA. fighter. Unfortunately for him the deciding two judges would see it 77-75 for Rios who took the WBC USNBC tile with the victory.

In the co-feature, San Fernando brawler Rigoberto Flores (6-1, 2 KOs) scored a six round unanimous decision over a tough Joaquin Chavez (1-4-2, 1 KO) who took the fight on just 24 hour notice. The quicker Chavez fought off an early attack and countered effectively throughout the fight but it wasn’t enough to impress the judges who saw it 59-55, 58-56 and 58-56 all for the more aggressive Flores.

Undefeated middle weight Eugene McClellen (9-0, 3 KOs) earned a six round unanimous decision over a tough Mike Noriega (4-0, 4 KOs). Despite a brutal body attack by Noriega in the opening rounds, McClellan was able to hang in there and counter with pinpoint accuracy, busting up the face of the Mexican after six rounds. Scores were 58-56, 58-56 and 60-54.

In a battle between unbeaten super featherweights, Derrick Murray ( 4-0-1, 3 KOs) and Pedro Toledo (1-0-1) fought to a four round unanimous decision draw. Toledo survived a flash knockdown in the opening round and battled back in the third and fourth. A right hand in the final minute of the fourth round sent a tired Murray crashing to the canvas to even the score. All three judges saw it 37-37.

Unbeaten heavyweight Javier Torres (3-0, 2 KOs) edged out a split decision over Avery Gibson (0-1-1) after four rounds. Torres surprisingly got the decision despite being deducted a point in the first round for a low blow and after taking heavy right hands from Gibson in the second and third rounds. Scores read 38-37, 38-37 for Torres while the third judge saw it 38-37 for Gibson.
