Sanchez upsets Contreras!

In an all out war, Victor Sanchez (5-6-1, 2 KO) beat hometown favorite Richard Contreras (10-2-1, 9 KOs) into a bloody mess before getting the TKO victory at the end of the sixth round on Friday night at the Double Tree Hotel in Ontario CA..

The two got straight to the point and went toe-to-toe in the center of the ring with both landing thudding blows. Contreras, however made the first mistake by staying in the pocket a moment too long. A counter left hand sent Contreras crashing to the canvas in the first round and from there it was a brawl. Contreras relied on his heart and power to carry him through the fight, unfortunately for him, Sanchez, of Houston TX proved to have a solid chin and walked through tremendous shots to land vicious combinations that shook up the Riverside fighter on numerous occasions. After a brutal sixth round, referee David Mendoza would step in and stop the beating at the request of Contreras’ corner.

In the co-featured bout of the night, San Diego’s Giovanni Santillan (8-0, 5 KOs) scored a one-sided six round decision over a scrappy Jesus Mendez (3-3, 2 KOs). The Texan gave it all he had but could not fight off the technical attack of Santillan, who scored an early knockdown and went on to earn scores of 60-53 by all three judges.

Freddy Roach guided Teras Shelestyuk (3-0, 3 KOs) did what he was supposed to do with his over-matched Mario Angeles (1-3-1),. The unbeaten Jr. Middleweight from the Ukraine floored Angeles with a quick right hand in round two. A second knockdown moments later prompted referee Raul Caiz Sr. to step in and call a halt to the action at the 2:04 mark.

Palmdale lightweight Johnny Reyes (3-0, 1 KO) dominated his opponent Johnny Fraizer (3-16-3, 3 KOs) for four straight rounds and cruised to a 40-36 unanimous decision.

Riverside’s Rafael Lopez (6-1, 5 KOs) opened the show with a unanimous decision victory over a win-less Omar Barefield (0-4) after four rounds. All three judges were in agreement with scores of 40-36.
