Gallery Thompson Boxing: Petrov tops Diaz on FNF!

2014 Boxcino lightweight champ Petr Petrov (36-4-2, 16 KOs) scored a ten round unanimous decision over a rough and rugged Gamaliel Diaz (39-12-3, 18 KOs) on Friday night at the Omega Products Int. in Corona Ca. Diaz was awarded a knockdown in the opening round but Petrov shook it off and went to work. The Russian (now residing in Spain) would return the favor in round seven, dropping Diaz with a right hand. An already ugly fight got worse when referee Jack Reiss was forced to deduct a point from Diaz following a low blow, which came after numerous warnings for rough tactics. After 10 rounds all three judges would have Petrov on top with scores of 98-89 and 97-90 twice.

In the co-feature, Ukranian Olympian Taras Shelestyuk (12-0, 8 KOs) remained unbeaten by defeating Juan Rodriguez (12-2, 5 KOs) by unanimous decision after eight rounds. Rodriguez stayed aggressive from the opening round but Shelestyuk boxed, picked his shots and went on to earn scores of 78 -74 and 79-73 twice. For the second time in as many fights, Shelestyuk was forced to fight through a bloody gash on his forehead due to an accidental clash of heads.

Unbeaten Emmanuel Robles (13-0-1, 3 KOs) earned a unanimous decision victory over a tough Wilberth Lopez (5-4, 1 KOs) after six rounds. All three judges had Robles on top with scores of 58-56, 58-56 and 59-55.

Petrov vs. Diaz headlined ESPN’s Friday Night Fights and was presented by Thompson Boxing and Banner Promotions.
