It’s been just over 7 months since lightweight contender Urbano Antillon (28-3, 20 KOs) suffered the third loss of his career.

The Maywood native was knocked down twice in the third round and eventually stopped by the heavy handed Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios at the Home Depot Center in Carson Ca.

The 29 year old brawler said he needed the time to recover from all the hard work but is now ready for a 2012 return.

Standnfight.com caught up with a fully rested Antillon at the Maywood gym on Saturday.

DS: Your back in the gym, any word on an upcoming fight?

Antillon: We just got back in the gym a couple weeks ago, so we’re just starting to talk to the promotional company. I took a long break. I needed some recovery time but now we’re in talks with Top Rank and we’ll see what comes up. We’re hoping for either April or May.

DS: Are you back here in Maywood? I heard you were up in Big Bear.

Antillon: I’m going to stay up in Big Bear. I’ve been up there for 2 years almost with Abel Sanchez. I love it up there, the hard work up there and away from the distractions.

I’ve never been a big party’er or big drinker but when I went up there it was just different. Your there for a certain purpose and that’s all you eat sleep and breath… Boxing. That and Abel Sanchez is up there. I love his energy, he’s punctual and he loves what he does.

Urbano Antillon vs Brandon Rios

Antillon down for the second time in round 3

DS: Your last fight with Brandon Rios didn’t go your way, tell me about that.

Antillon: There was a couple of mistakes I made. I got caught with a punch and went down. I was pretty hurt the first time but I got up and recuperated and handled it well.

I thought I was a little faster than him. Maybe he was a little stronger. Once I recovered, I started opening up and got caught again. I didn’t think I was as hurt the second time but I took a step and stumbled to the right and the referee waived it off.

DS: Did you feel like everything happened too fast? I remember being there and it was action packed from start to finish.

Antillon: That’s what was expected from the fight. You had 2 people that come forward and neither of us was going to do anything different.

I was in great shape but unfortunately I got caught with that punch that changed the fight and finished it.

DS: That fight could have been anyone’s fight.

Antillon: I think so. Like I said, I was faster than him and that was my advantage but I got caught.

DS: Did his power surprise you at all?

Antillon: we knew he had a decent punch. Everybody thought he was going to catch me with that uppercut but he didn’t. It was two right hands that caught me and put me down.

Antillon vs Rios

DS: It wasn’t all one sided, you had a couple moments in there too.

Antillon: Yea, I landed some good body shots and I know he felt the punches too.

DS: Is that one of your most memorable fights?

Antillon: The one that stands out the most is the Humberto Soto fight. That was just something else. It was on another level.

Like I remember being a child and watching Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera fight. I remember thinking, why do they want to fight again? They just took a beating from each other but after that Soto fight, I was ready to go again. Ready for the rematch but unfortunately it didn’t happen.

DS: On that card the Chavez Jr. fight fell through and you guys stepped in and gave the crowd a show.

Antillon: People have said, I’ve never been in a boring fight. Humberto Soto, If he would’ve had his choice, he would have chose to out box me and did a good job at it but I imposed my will on him.

That’s just my style. Breaking people down, I’ve always found pleasure in doing that but by the looks of things, I might have to change that.

DS: They say its not so much about the loss, It’s how you come back. Is 2012 your comeback?

Antillon: One thing about it is, I really love what I do. I love putting in the work and the fights. It’s truly a passion for what I do.

DS: Anything You’d like to say in closing?

Antillon: Just thanks for all the support I’ve received from everybody, from here and Chihuahua MX. I’m deeply appreciative of that. And I’ll be back… I’m back in the gym already!
